Hikurangi Enterprises was granted $63,000 towards the lease of a new site for their Whare Ora Build project, which will provide locally built, healthy and affordable housing solutions to whānau most in need.
They offer two dwelling options " one is a sleepout to complement existing house sites, while the larger "Whare Aroha" model is a stand-alone dwelling with kitchenette and bathroom. Both are built to a high standard that exceeds the building code and are delivered with piles, all necessary permits and Council sign-off.
Within 18 months, the project will improve local training and employment, creating 15 jobs and 10 apprenticeships.
Matawai Marae will receive just under $50,000 towards the Eastern Whio Link project, which aims to boost the employment of mana whenua as trappers and mahinga kai providers.
The Eastern Whio Link is a hunter-led conservation project to address the population decline of whio and help bring them back into local waterways through stoat trapping.
Through predator control, the project will support biodiversity and capability in the Matawai community.
Swim for Life Tairāwhiti will receive $20,000 towards delivering accessible swimming programmes for all schools within the region. It provides children ten 30-minute swim lessons with qualified instructors.
The programme is supported by several co-funders. The Trust has supported Swim for Life since 2016.
Several other community initiatives and events were supported in the November funding round.
- Hinenui Wh?nui Charitable Trust Board will get $20,000 " half will go towards their monthly pakeke programme that aims to keep pakeke connected and engaged in their communities. The other $10,000 will go towards T?manuhiri day, when Ng?i T?manuhiri and the community celebrate and wananga T?manuhiritanga.
- Cancer Society Gisborne East Coast received $10,000 towards wellness programmes.
- Ngati Porou Charitable Trust and Te Hauora o Tāranganui a Kiwa " Turanga Health both received $10,000 towards ongoing vaccination programmes.
- Te Kotahitanga Māori Music Artists Limited will receive $10,000 towards their promotion encouraging a "māori for māori" approach to dealing with COVID-19 (to be co-funded by Toitu Tairāwhiti).
- Te Kura Kaupapa Māori Te Waiu o Ngati Porou received nearly $6000 towards a community event to open Te Ara Patupaiarehe in Ruatoria. This is a Te Tairāwhiti Arts Festival satellite event, led within the Ruatoria community.
Nearly $90,000 was also awarded in Investigation, Research and Feasibility (IRF) grants.
The Waipaoa Farm Cadet Training Trust, which provides agricultural cadetship programmes to school leavers, will receive $30,000 towards a feasibility project to explore expanding their programme.
Te Paea Papakainga is a partnership between Maraetaha and Pakowhai farming incorporations and landowners at Muriwai, to explore sustainable housing developments. They will receive $30,000 for a feasibility study into housing solutions that will support economic development and provide accommodation for farm incorporation staff.
A $29,700 grant was approved for a regional Te Rea Taiao Workforce Development and Labour Hire Project. The feasibility report will investigate a sustainable business model for employment and contract opportunities in the biodiversity and ecological restoration sector.
All recipients in the November funding round demonstrated strong alignments with muka (outcomes) of the Trust's wellbeing framework, He Rangitapu He Tohu Ora.
