A state-of-the-art sports and recreation hub is taking shape at Victoria Domain, with Trust Tairāwhiti committing its largest-ever investment of up to $6.9 million towards phase one of the project. As part of the Tairāwhiti Community Facilities ‘early win’ initiatives, this redevelopment addresses the aging infrastructure identified in the 2018 Regional Community Facilities strategy.
Revitalising Victoria Domain
The transformation is underway, with contractors clearing out old infrastructure, including demolishing the existing netball tower and removing old pavement. Crews are now working on resurfacing the netball courts, setting the stage for a modern, multi-use facility that will serve the community for generations.
What’s included in phase one?
Phase one focuses on upgrading and repurposing the netball courts to support a variety of sports and activities. Main developments include:
- Resurfacing nine asphalt netball courts, with three upgraded to multi-use Rebound Ace surfaces suitable for netball, basketball, tennis and pickleball.
- Demolishing and replacing the existing netball tower facility.
- Conducting a carbon footprint assessment to ensure a sustainable approach.
Beyond infrastructure, the project aims to enhance local talent, foster cross-code collaboration and strengthen community ties. It aligns with the Trust’s strategic focus on spaces and facilities that enhance the quality of life in Tairāwhiti.
A hub for generations to come
Victoria Domain has long been a focal point for local sports, with more than 1,600 netball players using the courts annually. The redevelopment will ensure that future generations enjoy top-tier sports facilities, fostering a stronger, healthier community.
“Tairāwhiti has a young and active population. This investment ensures we can meet the growing demand for sports like pickleball, basketball and netball while creating a space that brings our community together for generations to come.”
— Doug Jones, Trust Tairāwhiti chief executive
Looking ahead: Future phases
- Phase one completion is expected in May 2025.
- Future phases will introduce new covered courts and further enhancements to expand the hub’s capabilities.
