Tourism operators from across the region came together for the inaugural Tairāwhiti Tourism Day Out, hosted by the Trust in its capacity as the Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO).
The event featured a mini-trade show experience, practical workshops, and presentations by industry experts, providing operators with opportunities to network and collectively enhance the region’s tourism offerings.
Operators participated in a fast-paced, speed-dating-style session to kick off the day, where they delivered ten-minute presentations about their products. It was a simple way to share their products and learn from peers, enhance their local product knowledge and industry relationships in an interactive and supportive environment.
Opening the presentations, Destination Marketing Manager Kim McVicker shared insights on trade marketing and the support available through the RTO. Kim shared what’s trending in major overseas markets and discussed how the RTO can support operators with marketing, trade representation, and tailored advice.
A final presentation by Viator Destination Manager Katie McDougall added an international perspective. Katie walked operators through how Viator partners with tourism businesses, helping them better connect with customers on a global scale.
With strong attendance from a diverse range of operators, the event drew plenty of positive comments.
“The day was awesome. I loved the speed-dating concept. You remember who you have met and what they offer, and it helped get my business out there,” says EcoKabs owner Rau Savage.
“It was great being able to meet other local business owners. We’ve always been keen to support and collaborate with local businesses wherever we can. Tairāwhiti has so many awesome venues and activities on offer, many I wasn’t even aware of,” says Amber Clarke from Touchwood Fishing Charters.
“I can’t wait to see how we can support each other and grow our presence and offerings in the national and international tourism market.”
The event finished with a post-event networking opportunity and plenty of enthusiasm to work together to showcase the best of Tairāwhiti.
