Trust Tairāwhiti today acknowledges the significant contribution of outgoing Chair and Trustee David Battin.
After three years with the Trust, Mr Battin leaves a legacy marked by strategic transformation, strong governance and a commitment to building enduring partnerships.
Among his most significant achievements was leading the restructuring of Eastland Group into what is now known as Tairāwhiti Investments, creating a modern investment structure designed to strengthen long-term returns.
During Mr Battin’s tenure, independent boards were established for Eastland Infrastructure Limited (EIL) and Eastland Generation (EGen). These governance changes positioned the businesses for future growth while ensuring strong oversight and strategic focus.
Trust Tairāwhiti Chief Executive Doug Jones said Mr Battin’s steady leadership had helped navigate a period of significant change.
"David has been instrumental in helping shape the future of the Trust’s investment portfolio. His strategic vision, and commitment to the region have left a lasting impact on Trust Tairāwhiti and the commercial entities that support our community's prosperity."
“Beyond the commercial achievements, Mr Battin also played a pivotal role in strengthening relationships between Trust Tairāwhiti and mana whenua.
“His leadership was central to the creation of the Kawenata between Trust Tairāwhiti and Ngāti Oneone”. The agreement marked a significant step in reconciliation and partnership, following a 174-day occupation on Te Pā Eke Tū on Hirini Street and decades of unresolved concerns.
Reflecting on his time with the Trust, Mr Battin said it had been a privilege to serve the people of Tairāwhiti.
"I am proud of what we have achieved together. From transforming our investment structures and strengthening governance, to helping build new relationships based on mutual respect and understanding, these outcomes have been the result of many people working together with a shared commitment to the future of our region."
Trust Tairāwhiti extends its sincere thanks to Mr Battin for his service, leadership and dedication, and wishes him all the best for the future.
