Trust Tairāwhiti has upgraded the Tairāwhiti data website, bringing together four years of Tairāwhiti Wellbeing Survey (TWS) data to help show how wellbeing in Tairāwhiti has shifted over time.

Drawing on 3,897 weighted survey responses, the refreshed website highlights areas of progress, growing concerns, and long-standing challenges.

Overall, the insights speak to improvements in everyday wellbeing, particularly around safety, social connection and quality of life. Despite this, confidence in economic opportunity, regional pride and rangatahi outlook is declining, while confidence in the region’s future economy has remained consistently low throughout all survey years.

Key insights from TWS 2022-2025 include:

  • Safety saw the greatest improvement overall, with the number of people who felt safe at home alone after dark increasing from 62% to 72%.
  • Perceptions of Tairāwhiti as a great place to live saw the largest decline, falling from 77% to 57%.
  • Trust, loneliness and locus of control are all lower for rangatahi than the rest of the region, pointing to pressure on social wellbeing.
  • Long-term optimism about the taiao remains cautious, with only 23% believing the natural environment will be healthier in five years’ time.
  • Confidence in housing, rural communities, the regional economy and Gisborne’s city centre remained consistently low across all survey years.

The new website brings regional wellbeing insights together in one place, helping government agencies, iwi, hapū, businesses, community organisations and funding partners better understand changing community experiences and where investment and support could have the greatest impact.

Insights from TWS 2022 to 2025 are now available on the Tairāwhiti data website.
