Contractors have made strong progress over the past month on the final upgrades for stage one of the Victoria Domain project.

Over the recent school holidays, courts eight and nine were completed, with new asphalt laid, lines marked and hoops installed, just in time for the start of the Twilight netball season.

TigerTurf recently completed the resurfacing of the existing tennis court, perfectly timed for players to partake in a tennis tournament on 1 and 2 November.

Stage one will be finished by the end of December, once the final three courts are completed. These courts will have rebound ace surfacing, making them suitable for a range of sports codes.

To date, Trust Tairāwhiti has funded this project with just over $4.9m, reflecting a commitment to creating quality community spaces that support wellbeing and active lifestyles. Last year, the Trust approved funding of up to $6.9m for Victoria Domain upgrades, the largest single investment the Trust has ever made.

Construction for stage two of the project is scheduled to begin in March 2026. This stage will see three new rebound ace courts built on the grass area behind the existing tennis courts, primarily shared between tennis and pickleball players. Preliminary planning for this stage is underway.

The Victoria Sport and Recreation Hub invites the community to learn more about the project and future plans at its annual general meeting on Tuesday, 4 November, from 6pm to 7pm at Surf City Squash.
